Animal Empathy in “Twins”

The three starships orbit the planet Paul on their way to Planet Dinah… Paul plays an important part later in the novel.

The Importance of the Connection to Animals

Relationship to Animals

As the reader finds the path through the second part of the book, it becomes evident that human relationship with animals has a significance beyond the farm and the house pet.  Cats are not only important to the humans of the Chacandor Ris community, they are essential to their physical and mental health – and more.  Cats anticipate the threat of the Jiinma and, later, protect the relationship with the Khoho on Planet Paul.

Humans with Special Powers

Sophia, a woman with extraordinary empathic powers and the ability to communicate with her cats, uses this capability to communicate with a Paulasoraus later in the book.  In the graphic image on this page, the Khoho, a dyno-chicken, and a Paulasoraus, one regarded as Pelo e Kholo or Big Heart, becomes an important intermediary for the New Ris people in understanding the animal life of Planet Paul.

Animal Empathy on Earth

Many examples of animal empathy exist in our world today.  There are service dogs that can anticipate epileptic seizures.  Tales are told of nursing home cats that sense when someone is about to pass and will sit with that person until they do so.  Pet therapy has been well documented for several decades.  Yet, the depth of the connections is yet to be plumbed.  In The Twins of Demeter, current knowledge is extended into a fiction based upon the reality that humans and animals can develop a connection that could lead to communication and a symbiosis of mutual benefit.
